Ok so aside from that Mickey Worthless and James Arthur handbags lets get into some real Don't Flop battle news.
Chris Leese, replacing Shotty Horroh who's stepped down from battling for a while was challenging Tony D for the Don't Flop title. People may have been disappointed to see Chris standing there instead of Shotty but this battle was crazy. Two contrasting styles going head to head and it went off. It took me two watches to really figure out who won. Chris Leese a mutli-rapper with a jokey style came out the blocks like a fucking savage. He got right up in Tony's grill and was spitting some good quality shit with a lot of aggression. Chris being from the north had the crowd behind him and were gassing him right up and his first round which made a big impact.
Tony D's relaxed style was switch in pace, he had some strong bars but I just don't think he did enough in the first to take it and he ended it a little weak as well.
In the second, Chris came back spittin again some fast multi schemes that got the crowd buzzing. See, I nearly got caught out by this, but listening to it a second time I still think he took the first, but the second either wasn't as good in terms of content or Tony D just upped it. Probably a bit of both. When I looked past the crowd and focused on the bars I realised Tony's content in the second was alot more damaging and he started to break him down with personals and clever fucking wordplay.
So at 1-1 it was all to play for in the final round. Chris again coming with his fast multi-schemes which had me thinking 'hmmm, this is getting a bit samey', even though it was good and he had alot of passion behind it the content wasn't mind blowing. Tony D, then came back with more personals and really broke down Chris Leese with facts, word plays and name plays. I think it was a case of quality not quantity that won the day here. Chris needs to be able to switch up his style a bit more during rounds just for a change of pace. We saw Tony do it during the battle even if it was to mock Chris but it shows versatility and it also shows that if he wants to do that what Chris Leese is doing, he can. So points went Tony D's way there. I originally called it for Chris and agreed with Soul who was one of the judges who thought the same but when I checked it again, and analyzed it bar for bar, I think Tony took it. I think the crowd made Chris Leese bars sound hotter than they were. Great battle though.
[My Verdict: 2-1 Tony D]
Who do you think took it? Post your opinion.
A word on Shotty.
He hasn't quit battling totally, but we won't see him for a while. He has been doing it for a long time, way before his first Don't Flop appearance and he's put in alot of work on the battle scene. The thing is, he has also put alot of work into building his music following and has a solid fan base in Manchester. He's also signed to a record label and needs to make the quota. Battling constantly as he has been has shaved alot of time off of his music so he needs the time back to focus on that as it's where he's likely to make a living from what he loves doing ya dig? Now stop bitching motherfuckers he wasn't ducking no-one, it is what it is.
Check out Shotty's album though. I don't listen to a lot of UK hip hop and I think this is pretty fucking dope namsayin.
